One of the most discussed topic in the Moon landing hoax was that the flag seemed to be moving on the recordings, even though there was no wind or gravity. NASA of course was well aware of the fact that there was no air on the Moon, therefore wind as it is, simply did not exist. In order to instal a flag and make it look as natural as possible, scientists had to come up with a smart design.
In a Forbes article, they explain how the flag was designed and transported in order to enable the two astronauts to set it up on the lunar surface. Three months before the mission, the flagpole had to be designed in the last minute in order to be able to stand on its own when raised on the Moon.
One issue was to design it as compact as possible, since Apollo 11 had little space onboard. The other problem that had to be sorted was that even without any wind or gravity on the Moon, the flag had to look appealing when photographed. NASA engineer Jack Kinzler had a very smart way to solve these two problems. The flag’s top edge was hung from a horizontal crossbar which folded out from the top of the flagpole and locked into place. The lower corner of the flag would also connect to the flagpole.
The wrinkles on the flag appeared because it had been tightly packed in a tube during the journey, however it added an additional illusion of making the flag look like it was indeed fluttering. Furthermore, wearing a spacesuit with enormous gloves disabled the astronauts to fully extract the horizontal crossbar completely which made the flag even more clustered.
